Managing a Virtual Assistant

With decades of experience as a virtual manager, I have worked with many admin assistants. The experience has been largely positive. However, it requires a work arrangement based on setting clear expectations and deliverables.

Tips for a Successful Arrangement

Do meet with them regularly through a video interface. Even if the role or project feels minor, seeing each other as a reminder that you are two humans working together on the same goals is critical for success.

Do an actual roadmap with a shared tool you can access at any time and collaborate.

Don’t assume they always understand the expectations. Start small with short deadlines and build up the responsibilities as you see there is clarity.

Don’t forget to be personable. Even when virtual, you want to feel a part of the team. A small amount of relationship-building can go a long way. People work hard for those they have a positive connection to.

Critical Tools for Virtual Work

Zoom for regular touch-base meetings. Slack for day-to-day questions and conversations. And Trello for collaboration on the project roadmap.
